By default, the configure script makes its best guess at what settings to use assuming that its preparing the system for you the developer. Sometimes (quite frequently), it won't guess correctly, or you will want to adjust some of its default choices.

The are many command line options you can invoke when using the configure script. We won't go through all of them here (you can refer to the man page if you are really curious).
